The one poster is wrong, I just purchased Toyota Factory red coolant from Carquest but it is $23 a bottle. Owners who install aftermarket antifreezes in their Toyota cooling system are sabotaging the lifespan potential of their cooling systems and engines. Since 1988 Toyota has spent at least $5.00 extra per car to fill them at the factory with its proprietary formulation of HOAT antifreeze to help owners avoid the problems mentioned above which harm the company's reputation for building supremely durable engines. Here again, Toyota antifreeze is fail safe because you can leave it in the engine for 5-10 years and it will still not cause mineral deposit buildups inside the radiator (no silicates to fall out of suspension) Countless Toyota owners have had to replace their radiators because of this clogging problem - just check out the Corolla 1985-1997 forums, for example. Toyota antifreeze, by contrast, is fail safe - you can leave it in the engine for 5-10 years and it will still protect the aluminum cylinder heads as well as the cast iron engine blocks from corrosion and rusting.Īnother way silicate based coolants have destroyed thousands of Toyota engines is via causing silicate mineral buildups in the radiator core tubes which in turn reduces coolant flow and the heat transfer capability of the radiator which in turn causes engine overheating. While it's theoretically true this aluminum corrosion can be avoided by changing a silicate antifreeze every year without fail, 99% of owners who use silicate antifreezes are unwilling to change it that often. Silicate based coolants have destroyed hundreds of thousands of Toyota engines via their poor aluminum corrosion protection which causes erosion of coolant passeges which in turn lead to head gasket failures in big bore Toyota engnes like the 22R series 4 cylinder and 7M-GE inline 6. HOAT coolants that are silicate free are not available in auto parts stores, hence no Toyota approved coolants can be found in auto parts stores. Toyota SLL coolant is a HOAT coolant - it says so right in the owners manual of all late model Toyotas. Also Honda’s 2000 era light green antifreeze is not a conventional green high silicate antifreeze. The Honda Blue antifreeze is not the same as BMW’s Blue antifreeze, only in that it is a similar color. There have been, in some cases, problems that the manufacturer warranted the gaskets for failure and not due to antifreeze. One of the major causes of head or intake gasket failures is poor maintenance. For an example: Prestone Extended Life Antifreeze (in the yellow jug) is a silicate and borate free OAT formulation, not a conventional high silicate antifreeze formulation that is shown on the chart.Īlso, rumors on top quality aftermarket antifreezes destroying head or intake gaskets are baseless. The comments on aftermarket antifreeze are completely out of date and should not be recognized. A high concentration of silicates is known to shorten water pump seal life and also silicates precipitate faster than other inhibitors. Toyota and Honda do not use silicates in their coolant. Toyota LL & SLL antifreeze is a silicate and borate free OAT based antifreeze.
